That's why they need to change their algorithms so frequently -- to stay ahead of the tricks people use to get top rankings.

That being said, there are still a lot of legitimate ways you can optimize your site without angering the search engines and causing them to drop you from their list.

Here are some of the best things you can to do ensure your site has a high ranking:

1. Ask relevant sites to link to your site

In the past, scoring a high ranking with a search engine was all about positioning your keywords in "prime real estate" positions in your text and site coding. All that has changed, however. These days, links are king!

Search engines place a huge amount of importance on the number of sites that link to yours. But it's not just the quantity of links that matter, it's also the quality. Search engines look at how relevant the links are -- i.e., how much the content of the linking site has in common with the content on your site.
The more relevant, the better!

Search engines also look at how "important" the linking site is. What kind of "online presence" does it have? How much traffic does it get?

For example, your site will get a higher ranking if it's linked to by sites such as BBC.com or nationalgeographic.com instead of, say, the personal homepage of your friend's neighbour's kid.

2. Pay attention to keyword inclusion and placement

Keywords may no longer be the sole determining factor of a site's ranking, but they're still pretty important. The most useful places to include them are:

•In your domain name -- only make sure your keywords are in the root of your URL, not the stem! For example, if your main keyword phrase is "cell phones," try to get a domain name such as "www.cell-phones.com" instead of "www.mobileusa.com/cell-phones.com." Some search engines will actually penalize sites for including key words in the stem of a URL.

•In the title tags in your source code

•In the meta description of your site -- this is much less important than it used to be, but it can't hurt.

•In your meta keyword tags
HOWEVER: Be sure you only include relevant keywords! Search engines will penalize you if you try to sneak in keywords that have nothing to do with the content of your site.

3. Create content-rich "information pages" to direct traffic to your site

An easy way to boost the number of pages that link to your site is to create some pages yourself!

However, you have to make sure these pages contain valuable contents that provide people with useful information. Search engines hate "pointer pages" that have no content and exist only to add to the number of links pointing to a site.

Be sure the information relates to the content on your site and has your keywords placed in advantageous positions. This will boost the ranking of your pages with the search engines and ensure they get lots of traffic -- which they can then redirect to your site.

4. Submit your site to online directories

Be sure to submit your site to important directories such as Yahoo!, the Open Directory Project, and About.com, as well as smaller directories. Your listing on these directories will help your ranking with the major search engines.

5. Multiply and conquer!

Create a "community" of related sites that link to each other. Why stop at only one information page? The more content-rich sites that point to your site, the better!

1. Beware irrelevant links!

Yes, it's a good idea to get a lot of different links pointing to your site, but the search engines only like RELEVANT links. If they find sites that have nothing in common with the content on your site linked to your web site, they'll lower your relevancy rating.

2. Beware irrelevant keywords!

Search engines hate finding irrelevant keywords on your site -- especially in your meta tags. If they catch you using keywords that have nothing to do with the actual content of your site, they'll penalize you for it.

3. Don't "keyword stuff" your meta tags!

In the past, people used to repeat their keywords in their meta tags over and over again. This used to get them a high ranking with the search engines -- but not any more! Search engines are on to this trick and will punish you for it by dropping your ranking.

4. Don't create "link farms"!

"Link farms" are the evil cousins of the "information pages" we discussed above.

In the past, some spammers used to build multiple "doorway" sites that existed only to multiply the number of links pointing to their sites.

Unlike content-rich information pages,these doorway pages would usually only include a string of keyword terms that would earn them a high ranking with the search engines.

The search engines have caught on to this tactic, however, and will drop you from their listings if they find you using it.

5. Avoid "free for all" link pages!

Don't bother placing links to your site on pages where everyone and their dog is invited to put up a link. Such sites have extremely low relevancy ratings and will cost you points with the search engines.

Many a time, as Internet Marketers, we get in touch with customers just once and that is it. After making sales the first time, we lose contact with the customer not taking into consideration that the same customer can be a repeat customer.

It is important to keep tab on your customers and continually get in touch with them even if you do not have any product to sell to them. 10 Questions You NEED to Ask If Your Site Isn’t Making Any Sales

Imagine: After months of hard work, your website is finally live. You’ve officially been open for business an entire week. And yet you haven’t made any sales.
Not. One. Single. Sale.
Argh!
Don’t despair. We’ve all been there. In fact, this is one of the most common problems new Internet entrepreneurs ask me to solve for them.
Here’s something that’ll help ease the pain of turning a "dud" site into one that rakes in the profits: Derek Gehl’s surefire "My Website Ain’t Making Money!" troubleshooting checklist.
If you recently launched a website and aren’t getting the results you expected, you need to ask yourself every single question on the list below, starting with number one. Once you can answer "yes" to all 10 questions, I guarantee the sales will come rolling in.
1. Is there actually a market for your product?
By that I mean are you POSITIVE you’re selling a product or solution people are actively looking for online - and not finding? That’s the formula for a successful Internet business. And that’s the first question you should answer … even before you set up a website.
The best way to do that is with keyword research. (Our favorite keyword research tools are Keyword Discovery (keyworddiscovery.com) and BeBiz (bebiz.com).)
2. Are you getting enough traffic?
If you’ve had only 100 visitors and haven’t made a sale, be patient. Before you can begin to assess your website’s effectiveness, you need to have had at least 1,000 unique visitors (not page views).
3. Are you getting targeted traffic?
If you’ve had 1,000+ visitors to your website and you still haven’t made a sale, find out where your visitor traffic is coming from.
The best way to get top-quality traffic to your site is by bidding on extremely targeted keywords for your pay-per-click (PPC) ads. (By "targeted," I mean keywords that speak directly to the people who are most likely to buy your product.)
If you drive 1,000 visitors to your site - using targeted keywords in your PPC ads - and you still don’t make a sale, then you know the problem isn’t the quality of the traffic you’re getting.
It’s your website.
So let’s take a look at that next …
4. Is your headline effective?
If the page you’re driving traffic to with your PPC ad doesn’t have a compelling headline that clearly communicates a powerful benefit, your potential customers aren’t going to stick around for your offer.
Writing a better headline is typically the easiest way to fix a floundering website. If you get more people to stay on your site and read your offer, more people will buy your product.
5. Are you distracting your visitors from your main sales message?
You need to get rid of everything that doesn’t keep your visitors focused on your main offer. This includes links to other websites, Google AdSense ads, banner ads for other products, free articles that don’t support the sale … the list goes on.
6. Are you using testimonials effectively?
Testimonials are one of your most powerful selling tools. Nothing says "Buy it now!" like an unbiased third-party recommendation.
If you don’t yet have any testimonials, give your product to a few friends and ask them to provide you with testimonials on how well it worked for them.
7. Does your guarantee take away the risk of buying?
A good guarantee is essential - especially when you’re selling on the Internet.
Unless you’re a major brand that your customers already trust (like Sony, Wal-Mart, Pepsi), you need to let them know you’ll stand behind your product. So reassure them that if they’re not 100 percent satisfied, they can send it right back for a full refund. And remember, a longer guarantee usually results in more sales - and fewer refunds.
8. Is your price too high? Or too low?
Most people know that if you price your product too high, you’ll hurt your sales. But this can also be true if your price is too low.
People get suspicious when the price is far below what they were expecting. They think it’s probably "too good to be true" - and, as a result, they don’t feel confident making a purchase.
9. Is your ordering system easy to use?
Just because you can figure out how to navigate through your ordering process, that doesn’t mean your average customer can.
To make sure your ordering system is "user-friendly," find a few friends who aren’t very Internet savvy and get them to order your product. Watch over their shoulders and take notes. Where did they get stuck?
Fix whatever problems they encountered - immediately - because your potential customers are encountering them too.
10. Do you have good sales copy?
If you aren’t using well-written sales copy to sell your product, you’ll never achieve online success. It’s that simple. Your product isn’t going to sell itself! You need to have the right words to do the job.
So there they are … the 10 questions I ask whenever I look at a website that’s not turning visitors into sales. Once I’m able to answer "yes" to all 10 questions, I always see a substantial improvement in the site’s conversion rate.

Even if you're just looking for extra money to pay your car payment or provide extra money for your family, an internet business is an easy way to do it. Who knows? Eventually your income from your business might replace your job and you can say goodbye to the 9 to 5 forever.
If you want to start a business, whether it's a tough economy or not, there are certain things you need to do first. Here's how to get started:
1. Create a plan for starting your business.
This doesn't have to be anything complicated. You can use a notebook to record all of your information. The importance of proper planning can't be stressed enough.
Start by writing down things like what kind of business you want to start. Will you offer your own products or someone else's? Do you have a skill, like writing, that might make a good business? Will you build a website, or will you use bum marketing techniques to market your business?
Don't forget to include your topic here. Do you have a hobby that might translate to a business? There are thousands of hobbies, from gardening to fly fishing, that people want to know about.
Assess your skills and find out what you need to learn and learn it BEFORE you do take the next step. If you've never built a website or written promotional copy, now is the time to learn it, not after you've thrown away money because you didn't know what you were buying.

2. Invest in essential tools.
If you plan to build a website, you'll need hosting and a domain name. Autoresponders are another essential tool you'll want to consider. If you're starting out on a shoestring, you may want to consider investing in an autoresponder script.
You may need to learn how to install scripts yourself, especially if you are working on a tight shoestring budget. Don't sweat it. Just buy a good general domain, which will cost you about nine dollars, and the best hosting you can afford.
Don't spend money on anything you don't have to. Before you buy anything for your business, ask yourself: "Will this ebook, software, etc. contribute to the overall growth of my business?" Only buy what you really need.
3. Create an effective marketing plan.
What I like about the internet is all of the free marketing opportunities available. This is also the area in which most people, and most companies, fail during tough economic times. They don't market, or they don't market enough.
If anything, this is the time to market more. Again, consider your skills here. For example, if you like forums, learn everything you can about forum marketing and then commit to spending a certain amount of time doing it every day. Commit to a certain number of posts.
The same applies with articles, free classifieds, press releases, and other types of free marketing. Commit a certain amount of time every day to it and then do it. Market every opportunity you get.
In spite of tough economic times, now is the time to start and grow a business. Do your homework, create a plan, and execute that plan. You will succeed.

Internet business is one that is done through the internet. There are many businesses that can be done on the internet. Some of them are affiliate programs, taking surveys, get paid to read, foreign exchange trading, widely known as forex trading, blogging, webhosting, domain registration, website designing, matrices, e-gold trading, e-stock trading, high yield investment programs, usually known as HYIPs and so on.

As earlier advised, in getting into the internet business, care must be taken as there are lots of scams on the internet. Scams are those that are not genuine businesses but are primarily there to siphon you of your money.
